HALO is operated by Stichting Hemel en Dampkring as part of the Total Together initiative.

HALO helps people prepare for, experience, and remember total solar eclipses while contributing to a better understanding of eclipse experiences.

2. Information We Collect

HALO only collects the information needed to provide your experience. Depending on how you use the app, this may include:

  • Account information (Sign in with Apple or Google)
  • Name (optional)
  • Email address
  • Viewing location
  • Profile responses
  • Survey responses
  • Personal audio recordings
  • Crash reports
  • Analytics data

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account
  • Calculate your eclipse countdown
  • Build your personal HALO
  • Build the Afterglow (=shared experiences during the eclipse)
  • Store your reflections and observations
  • Provide app features
  • Improve the reliability and performance of HALO

We never sell your personal information.

We never share your personal information with advertisers or data brokers.

We never use your information for advertising.

4. Contributing to Eclipse Research

HALO is also a scientific initiative that explores how people experience total solar eclipses.

With your consent, your profile responses, survey responses, and personal audio recordings may be used for scientific research and shared eclipse projects, including Afterglow.

Research is carried out by Stichting Hemel en Dampkring in collaboration with The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands.

Where possible, research uses anonymized or aggregated information and is never intended to identify individual participants.

5. Sharing Your Information

We only share information when necessary to operate HALO or when you choose to share it.

This currently includes Google Firebase. Future versions of HALO may allow you to share your HALO or selected content with others.

6. Google Firebase

HALO uses Google Firebase, a secure cloud platform provided by Google, to store and manage your information. We use the following Firebase services to power the app's features:

  • Authentication: To securely manage your user account and sign-in sessions.
  • Cloud Firestore: To save your profile information, survey responses, and active location settings.
  • Cloud Storage: To safely store your personal audio reflections.
  • Remote Config: To deliver dynamic configuration and visual updates.
  • Crashlytics: To monitor app stability and fix technical errors.

7. Permissions

HALO only requests the permissions needed to provide its features.

Current permissions: Microphone (to record personal audio reflections)

Future permissions (if implemented): Camera, Notifications, Photos, Location

8. Your Choices

You remain in control of your information. You can update your profile, delete surveys and recordings, and delete your account.

Request deletion of your personal information by contacting Stichting Hemel en Dampkring at info@moonmeetssun.com.

When you delete your account, your personal information will normally be removed within 30 days. Secure backups may be retained for up to 90 days before being automatically deleted.

Anonymous research data may be retained for future scientific research because it can no longer be linked to an individual.

9. Data Security

We use appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information.

Your information is securely stored using Google Firebase.

10. Children's Privacy

HALO is not intended for children under 16 years of age unless permission has been provided by a parent or legal guardian where required by applicable law.

11. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.

When significant changes are made, we will notify users through the app or our website.
